Jordan Schafer injury: Braves OF has stress fracture in ankle

A recent MRI revealed the extent of Schafer’s injury. The Braves outfielder will be out longer than originally anticipated.

USA TODAY Sports

A recent MRI on Jordan Schafer showed that the injured Braves outfielder is suffering from a stress fracture in his right ankle, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Carroll Rogers.

The Braves placed Schafer on the disabled list July 4. He originally suffered an injury about a week prior to that when he fouled a ball off his ankle. Schafer had been taking batting practice recently and was looking at a return around the All-Star break, but the new findings will change his expected return date.

Braves general manager Frank Wren says the injury will likely keep Schafer out a total of six weeks, according to Rogers’ report. Given the two weeks he has already spent on the DL, Schafer is looking at rejoining the lineup in another month.

The stress fracture did not show up on previous X-rays. The fracture is on the inside of the bone and is not easy to spot, particularly immediately after the injury occurs. Wren said the fracture would not have shown up had the team done an MRI on the ankle when Schafer was first placed on the disabled list.

In a part-time role with Atlanta, Schafer is in the midst of a career year. In 2013, he has hit .312/.399/.464 in 61 games.
