Jeff Francoeur activated by Giants

Francoeur will start in left field for the Giants on Sunday.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants purchased the contract of outfielder Jeff Francoeur, the team announced on Saturday.

The Giants signed Francoeur to a minor-league contract on July 9 after the Kansas City Royals designated the outfielder for assignment on June 29. Francoeur played four games in Triple-A, going 4-for-18 while getting acclimated to left field. Francoeur has spent most of his major-league career in right field.

Hunter Pence is entrenched as the Giants' right fielder, so San Francisco plans to play Francoeur in left. Francoeur will start tomorrow in left field against San Diego Padres southpaw Eric Stults, according to Andrew Baggarly of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

Francoeur struggled at the plate for the Royals this season, hitting .208/.249/.322 in 193 plate appearances. The outfielder has hit lefties well during his career, hitting .287/.338/.471 against southpaws, but only hit .242/.288/.306 against left-handed pitchers in 2013.

San Francisco designated Chris Heston for assignment to make room for Francoeur on the 40-man roster. The team also activated Santiago Casilla from the DL, and optioned Jean Machi and Nick Noonan to Triple-A Fresno.
