Freddie Freeman injury: Braves 1B’s sore thumb clouds All-Star Game appearance

Freeman jammed his thumb on the first play of Saturday’s game and could be forced to miss his first All-Star game.

USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman may be forced to miss his first All-Star game due to a sore right thumb, reports the Associated Press.

Freeman jammed his thumb during the first play of Saturday's game against the Reds. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons threw wide of first base after fielding a Chris Heisey ground ball, forcing Freeman to range in front of the base path to reach for the ball. Heisey hit Freeman's glove while running to first, jamming the first baseman's thumb in the process.

The Braves' Sunday lineup does not include Freeman, who is wearing a soft splint. Instead, the freshly activated Evan Gattis will play first base for Atlanta.

Freeman earned his first All-Star bid through the National League's final vote, beating out Yasiel Puig, Hunter Pence, Adrian Gonzalez, and Ian Desmond.

In his third season as a full-time member of the Braves roster, the 2011 Rookie of the Year runner-up is hitting .308/.386/.468 and is third in fWAR among National League first basemen.
