Matt Garza trade rumors: Cubs inform RHP he’ll likely be traded, per report

The Cubs’ ace is likely headed to a new home, as the team has reportedly informed him to expect a trade.

Chicago Cubs ace Matt Garza has been told to expect to be traded in the near future after contract negotiations stalled, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The Cardinals, Indians, Rangers, Red Sox, among other teams, are rumored to be showing interest in acquiring the right-hander, with Cleveland and Texas looking like the favorites to do so at this point.

There is certainly no lack of interest in Garza, who is the top available pitcher on the trade block. He is currently the only top-of-the-rotation quality pitcher available, and has done an excellent job bolstering his stock in recent weeks -- during his last six starts, he’s gone 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA.

Garza was shelved with an elbow injury for the end of 2012 and the beginning of this season, but is showing no signs of health issues now. He’s 6-1 on the year with a 3.17 ERA and boasts 62 strikeouts to just 20 walks.

The Cubs were initially interested in retaining Garza’s services themselves, entering into contract negotiations with him. Talks dried up over a rumored difference of opinion between the two sides over the average annual value of the deal, prompting the team to begin shopping him in the trade market.

The Cubs currently sit 14 games back from St. Louis in the NL Central.
