MLB trade rumor roundup: Matt Garza deal expected, Giancarlo Stanton staying put?

Recapping all the latest rumors from this past weekend.

Christian Petersen

Here’s a recap of the trade rumors that were reported over the weekend.

Garza told to expect trade

The Cubs told pitcher Matt Garza to expect a trade, after last-ditch attempts at an extension fell through, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Garza has plenty of suitors, which include the Rangers, Red Sox, Indians, and Cardinals. Garza, 29, has an ERA of 3.17 in 71 innings this year, after he returned from an injury that also kept him out for the end of 2012. Garza tried to get an extension with the Cubs, but the team appears to be set on dealing the right-hander.

Giancarlo trade is a no-go

The Marlins are not expected to trade outfielder Giancarlo Stanton before the trade deadline, or at all, reports Danny Knobler. The team has held off despite repeated calls from teams such as the Rangers, as they want to see how the slugging outfielder looks with their up-and-coming group of young players. The team could deal other players in the month of July, but their prized possession will not hit the market.

Phillies looking for CFs

The Phillies are searching for a center fielder to take the place of the recently-injured Ben Revere, reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. The Phillies are still on the periphery of the playoff hunt, but this appears to be a signal that they will be buyers. A deal seems unlikely, however, as the Phillies farm system is rather bare and the market for CFs is not strong this summer. Some of the names mentioned in the article include Alejandro De Aza, Justin Ruggiano, and Colby Rasmus.
