Brandon McCarthy injury: Pitcher to start rehab this week

The D-Backs could get Brandon McCarthy back by the end of July.

Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy will begin his rehab this week at Triple-A Reno, reports Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that it will take at least two starts for McCarthy to be ready to get back on the mound in the big leagues.

McCarthy has been on the DL since late-May with inflammation in his shoulder. The Diamondbacks could certainly use the presence of McCarthy in their rotation, as they are running low on depth and are resorting to some of their younger options at the moment.

The Diamondbacks are 50-45 at the All-Star Break, and currently sit 2 1/2 games ahead of the red-hot Dodgers. They stand to get some players, McCarthy included, back from injury, which could give them a boost to try and match the boost that Yasiel Puig has given the Dodgers.

McCarthy, 30, had an ERA of 5.00 in 66 2/3 innings this year before his injury. He pitched to an ERA of 3.24 in 2012 for the Athletics, before having his season abruptly ended by a line drive to the head. McCarthy suffered a seizure that was apparently linked to the incident in June, but recovered and is obviously back on track.
