Alex Rodriguez injury: A-Rod expects to return to Yankees Monday

He’s just reached Triple-A in his rehab, but is already setting a date for his big-league return.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has missed all of 2013 thank to recovery from hip surgery, but he expects to return to the big leagues on Monday once he completes his rehab assignment at Triple-A, according to A-Rod himself, courtesy Mike Francesca's radio show.* Rodriguez's rehab begins on Thursday, but barring any unexpected setbacks, that seems like a logical time frame.

*As far as we know, Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman didn’t call into the show to lob expletives at Rodriguez for announcing as much without going through the Bombers’ brass first, but maybe that’ll come in a press conference later on.

The Yankees could use Rodriguez, either at third base or at designated hitter if that’s all he can suit up for, as they have received slash lines of just .225/.288/.301 and .214/.300/.370 out of them this year, respectively. A-Rod has played seven of his 10 rehab games at the hot corner, and the other three as a DH, so the Yankees don’t seem overly concerned with his playing third following his surgery and recovery.

New York sits in fourth place in the American League East, but are much closer to a playoff berth than that suggests, as they are all of three games out of an AL wild card spot, and six games back of the first-place Red Sox. Adding Rodriguez to the mix, even the diminished version from 2012, could do a lot to change the Yankees' fortunes in the season's remaining months.
