Alex Cobb injury: Rays RHP throws simulated game

The Rays got some encouraging news on one of their better pitchers Thursday.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb tossed a four inning simulated game Thursday at the club's complex in Port Charlotte, Roger Mooney of The Tampa Tribune reports.

More Rays at DRaysBay: When Alex Cobb Returns.....

Working his way back from a concussion suffered last month on a line drive to the head, Cobb took another solid step this week. It’s a positive development as the Rays hope to get their pitching staff healthy for the stretch run.

The Rays have gone with Chris Archer to fill Cobb's rotation spot, and he's has pitched to a 2.96 ERA in nine starts this season. They will be faced with an interesting situation when Cobb returns, as they will have six viable options in their rotation.

One option could be to trade away Roberto Hernandez, who is on a short-term contract and would appear to be the odd-man out in this situation.

Cobb told Mooney that he was challenged by game situations, especially fielding bunts and pitching with runners on base. That means his return probably isn’t coming immediately, but it’s progress after being sidelined by the head injury in June.

In 13 starts this season for the Rays, Cobb has a 3.01 ERA over 83 2/3 innings.
