Cubs to recall Junior Lake, per report

The Cubs will begin looking towards their future, as they have recalled infielder Junior Lake.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs will recall infield prospect Junior Lake from Triple-A Iowa before the weekend, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reported Thursday.

In a corresponding move, the club will place Brian Bogusevic on the 15-day disabled list, opening up a roster spot for Lake. Bogusevic, 29, is hitting .261/.277/.326 in limited at-bats this season for the Cubs while manning multiple outfield spots.

Lake is widely-regarded as a player with many physical tools, but he has struggled to put them together throughout his minor-league career. The 23-year-old infielder, signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2003, is batting .295/.341/.462 with 10 doubles in 40 games in Triple-A this season, which may be a signal of some positive progress.

The Cubs say they intend to use Lake in both outfield and infield spots, trying to create versatility within their own lineup mirroring that of the Cardinals.

The Lake call-up means that the Cubs are likely going into full-out sell mode, looking towards the future in regard to evaluating their own talent. Expect some extra opportunities for players like Lake later this season as veterans move to contending teams.
