Andrew Bailey injury: Red Sox RHP likely out for season with labrum, capsule damage to shoulder

Red Sox reliever Andrew Bailey has been placed on the DL and may need season-ending surgery

The Red Sox placed reliever Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with labrum and capsule damage in his shoulder, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

Bailey has not yet decided if he will undergo surgery, but an operation appears likely at this point. Even if Bailey doesn't opt for surgery, there is a strong chance that he will not return during the 2013 season. Red Sox manager John Farrell told Bradford that Bailey first experienced pain against the Athletics on Friday, July 12 while facing Jed Lowrie

“He finished the inning and it was apparent as the night wore on and the next day he felt continued soreness. When we returned off the West Coast he had an MRI and exam on Monday. He was seen for a second opinion by Dr. Altchek over the break, and both exams concur, there’s some damage. I think Andrew is at the point now of weighing all the information that he is receiving to take the next step.”

The Red Sox bullpen has already lost two other key relievers for the season. Joel Hanrahan was brought in over the offseason via trade to serve as the Red Sox closer after Bailey struggled in 2012. Hanrahan wasn't playing well before landing on the DL in May with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. The team also lost lefty Andrew Miller to a foot injury in early July.

Bailey had served as the Red Sox closer following the loss of Hanrahan but he pitched poorly in that capacity and lost the job to Koji Uehara following a stretch in which he blew three saves in five chances. In 28-2/3 innings this season, Bailey has a 3.77 ERA with eight saves. Jose De La Torre was called up from Triple-A to take Bailey's place in the Red Sox bullpen.
