Nolan Reimold injury: Orioles OF will have spine surgery

Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold’s season will be cut short due to a back operation for the second straight year.

USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold will undergo surgery to repair a spinal fusion operation from more than a year ago. The recovery process will likely cause him to miss the remainder of the season, according to Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun.

For more on the Orioles, head over to Camden Chat.

Reimold was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday and will have the surgery on Tuesday in Clearwater, Fla., after being evaluated and recommended for an operation by a neurosurgeon during the All-Star break. Orioles manager Buck Showalter told Encina that he doesn’t expect Reimold to play another game in 2013.

“I don’t think you will see him again this year. He’s on the 15[-day disabled list], and we don’t need the spot yet. But if we had to [put him on the 60-day DL to free up a 40-man roster spot], we could, to be frank with you.”

Reimold appeared in 40 games this season, hitting .195/.250/.336 in 140 plate appearances. He spent almost two months on the DL with a hamstring injury before returning to the Orioles on July 2. Since then, Reimold actually improved his batting average by seven points, hitting .222 in 27 plate appearances spanning nine games.

Prior to undergoing surgery to remove a herniated disk in his neck last June, Reimold hit .313/.333/.627 in a 16-game campaign in 2012.
