Hunter Pence trade rumors: Giants unlikely to move OF, but teams show interest

Hunter Pence is not officially on the market, and may never be this season, but teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates have shown interest in trading for the outfielder.

USA TODAY Sports

Hunter Pence might not be on the market, but the San Francisco Giants appear to have suitors if they decide to trade away their right fielder. The Pittsburgh Pirates appear to be the most interested team in the outfielder, but other teams are likely interested as well, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

The 30-year-old Pence is currently hitting .265 this season with a .762 OPS and 14 home runs in 95 games. For the Giants to trade him, Heyman says the team would have to decide it was officially out of contention. San Francisco is currently fourth in the NL West with a 44-51 record, 5.5 games back of the division-leading Diamondbacks.

The Giants would also reportedly have to be “overwhelmed” by an offer if they were to trade Pence. The Pirates have a deep farm system, though, and would definitely be able to make a strong offer if they believe it is worth the cost.

Pittsburgh is seeking right-field help to shore up a position that has an overall batting line of .255/.311/.396 this season. The Pirates are also rumored to have been looking into Chicago White Sox outfielder Alex Rios.

Pence has been a popular trade-deadline acquisition the past two years. In 2011, he was traded from the Astros to the Phillies. The next year, the Phillies shipped him off to San Francisco mid-season. He will be a free agent at the end of the 2013 season.
