Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm left his start on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox in the fourth inning with a sprained left wrist, the team announced after the game.

Maholm initially injured his wrist batting on July 10, reports Brian Hedger of MLB.com. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez told Hedger that X-rays on Maholm’s wrist came back negative, and that he hopes the southpaw can make his next start.

The starter discussed his injury with reporters, telling Hedger:
“I think it was more just warming up in the fourth. My warmup pitches going out in the fourth were extremely high and it was bothering me to where I didn’t think I should keep going. Hopefully here in the next day or so, it’ll be good to go and I’ll be able to throw.”
Maholm struggled against the White Sox, as he allowed seven runs on seven hits while issuing two walks and striking out none. The lefty fell to 9-9 on the season, and his ERA rose to 4.41 after entering the game with a 3.98 ERA.
The Braves have a pair of options if Maholm is forced to spend time on the disabled list. Brandon Beachy is nearing his return from Tommy John surgery, wihile Alex Wood has been sent down the minor leagues to stretch out his arm.
