Around the Bases: Todd Helton hits historic double, Dodgers win in extras

Rays 4, Blue Jays 3: Joel Peralta escaped a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the eighth, helping Jeremy Hellickson win his fifth straight decision. Desmond Jennings went 3-for-4 with a walk, while Wil Myers had a pair of singles and drove in two runners. Jose Bautista hit homer No. 22 off Hellickson in the third inning.

Mets 5, Phillies 4: Gonzalez Germen bailed out fellow rookie Zack Wheeler, striking out Delmon Young with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to strand all three runners. Germen ended up earning his first major-league win, fanning three batters while allowing no hits in 1 2/3 innings relief. The Mets scored three runs off Cole Hamels in the first inning, who fell to 4-12 on the season.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 2: Hiroki Kuroda tossed seven strong innings, and Mariano Rivera recorded his 31st save of the season at Fenway Park. Brett Gardner went 3-for-5 at the plate, and Lyle Overbay and Eduardo Nunez each hit two doubles. Red Sox starter John Lackey was not thrilled with his effort against the Yankees:

White Sox 10, Braves 6: Alex Rios hit a grand slam one day after manager Robin Ventura removed the outfielder for not running hard enough on a groundball. Jake Peavy, making his first start since suffering a broken rib on June 4, allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings. Braves starter Paul Maholm left in the fourth inning with a sprained left wrist.

Reds 5, Pirates 4: Aroldis Chapman managed to record his 23rd save of the season despite allowing runners on the corners with nobody out in the ninth. Joey Votto drove in a pair of runs and Shin-Soo Choo extended his hitting streak to 14 games, helping to provide the Reds with just enough offense. Mat Latos improved to 9-3 on the year, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings.

Twins 3, Indians 2: Minnesota took advantage of a throwing error by Cleveland third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, scoring three runs in the sixth inning off reliever Rich Hill. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau each had a pair of hits and a walk, and both players scored during the decisive inning. Glen Perkins earned the save for a second straight night, but whomever runs the Indians Twitter account has yet to learn his name.

Dodgers 3, Nationals 1: Hanley Ramirez drove in Adrian Gonzalez with an RBI-double, breaking a 1-1 tie in the top of the 10th inning. Andre Ethier drove in Ramirez with a sacrifice fly to add an insurance run. Mark Ellis hit an RBI-single off Drew Storen in the seventh inning after Gio Gonzalez had held the Dodgers scoreless through six.

Royals 6, Tigers 5: Mike Moustakas hit a solo homer off Justin Verlander in the fifth inning, giving the Royals a lead they would not relinquish. Verlander struggled against Kansas City, allowing six runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking four batters while only striking out three. Salvador Perez went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Brewers 6, Marlins 0: Yovani Gallardo and four Milwaukee relievers combined to shutout Miami, only allowing five hits while fanning seven. Jonathan Lucroy went 4-for-4 with a double and home run, and Rickie Weeks smacked his 10th home run of the season. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke's jersey proved that it's difficult to spell Milwaukee:

Mariners 4, Astros 2: The Mariners scored four runs on one hit against the Astros, and starter Erik Bedard was charged with the loss despite allowing zero hits. Michael Saunders collected Seattle's only hit, a two-out, two-RBI double off Jose Cisnero in the seventh inning. The Mariners scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning thanks to a pair of Jason Castro passed balls.

Padres 5, Cardinals 3: Lance Lynn suffered his fourth loss in five starts after starting the season 11-1 for the Cardinals. Four San Diego relievers held St. Louis hitless over the final four innings, helping Edinson Volquez earn his seventh victory of the season. Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin both had multi-hit games for the Padres.

Rockies 9, Cubs 3: Todd Helton hit double No. 578 of his career, tying him with Wade Boggs for 18th on the all-time doubles list:

Carlos Gonzalez crushed his NL-leading 26th homer of the season, while Dexter Fowler went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. Juan Nicasio picked up his second straight win since being recalled from Triple-A on July 12.

Orioles 7, Rangers 4: The Orioles exploded for 17 hits, as each Baltimore starter collected at least one hit against Texas. Adam Jones went 2-for-5 with a home run, while Matt Wieters added three hits and a walk. Miguel Gonzalez improved to 8-3 on the season, allowing one run on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Angels 2, Athletics 0: C.J. Wilson turned in a dominant performance, holding Oakland scoreless for 8 1/3 innings. The starter only allowed three hits, striking out eight Athletics while only issuing two walks. Albert Pujols and Howie Kendrick both had multi-hit games, while Alberto Callaspo added a solo homer.

Giants 4, Diamondbacks 3: San Francisco used eight pitchers to hold Arizona to three runs, scoring just enough despite running into two outs at home in the fourth inning. Buster Posey hit a two-run homer off Josh Collmenter in the fifth inning, his 14th homer of the season. Matt Cain improved to 6-6 on the season, winning his first decision since June 13.
