Clay Buchholz injury: Red Sox P expected to visit Dr. James Andrews

Buchholz has been playing catch and throwing bullpen sessions since shortly after being placed on the DL in mid-June, but continued soreness in his neck has kept him out longer than expected.

Injured Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz will likely visit with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on continued soreness in his neck, reports WEEI.com.

Buchholz has been out since June 9 with stiffness in the trap muscle. Originally believed to be a minor ailment, the injury has kept him on the self for over a month with no timeline for a return in place. He began playing catch and throwing bullpen sessions shortly after being placed on the disabled list.

However, Buchholz had another setback in his recovery on Thursday as he continued to feel soreness after a throwing session. He had been on pace to go on a minor league rehab assignment soon, but those plans have changed.

The visit with Andrews has not been finalized, but it does appear to be likely as the Red Sox are reportedly in favor after Buchholz’s agent originally brought up the idea.

Andrews is a renowned sports medicine specialist famous for his deftness with major surgeries, including Tommy John surgery. Andrews has garnered a large amount of trust among players and front office personnel for his ability to accurately identify injuries.

Buchholz, who has a 1.71 ERA over 12 starts in 2013, will attempt to throw off flat ground again on Sunday.
