Chris Carpenter injury: Carpenter not getting closer to return

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter had a rough rehab start Saturday, and will stay in the minors until he is ready to get MLB hitters out.

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter made his second rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A Memphis and it did not go well, reports Joe Strauss of the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

Carpenter is currently recovering from a chronic nerve disorder, which was further complicated by lower back issues.

Carpenter said that he was not able to execute his pitches, and that prevented him from getting outs against a Triple-A lineup. His final line for the game was 3 1/3 innings, nine hits, four earned runs, two strikeouts, and two walks. Carpenter’s fastball was sitting 89-91 -- right around his norm over the last few seasons -- and topped out at 95.

The Cardinals currently have an abundance of pitching depth in their big-league rotation and at Triple-A, which means that they have the luxury of giving Carpenter all the time he needs on this rehab assignment before returning him to Busch Stadium. The team has also been mentioned in talks for Matt Garza, which would only further their tremendous group of pitchers.

Carpenter last started in the 2012 NLCS against the Giants. He said that he does not want to go back to the major leagues until he is able to get batters out, as he does not want to force someone out of a job unless he is ready.
