Matt Garza scratched from start as deal with Rangers nears

The Cubs have scratched their star pitcher as trade talks with the Rangers seemingly near their conclusion.

Brian Kersey

The Chicago Cubs have scratched starting pitcher Matt Garza from his scheduled start Monday night as a trade with the Texas Rangers nears completion, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. It appears arguably the top pitcher on the market will end up in Texas after all, despite on-and-off rumors over the past few days.

With the Cubs still rebuilding and Garza set to hit free agency this offseason, trading him became a top priority for the team when the two sides couldn’t agree on a contract extension. The Rangers were always considered the top suitor for his services, but reports continued to insist other teams were in the running.

However, this is the strongest indication yet of an impending deal between Texas and Chicago. With Garza scheduled to start Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cubs may have pushed to complete a deal rather than risk possible injury in a meaningless outing prior to the trade deadline.

It's unclear what kind of package Chicago will be receiving for Garza, but it will presumably include a number of top prospects from the Rangers. Mike Olt, Luke Jackson and C.J. Edwards were among the prospects named in past reports.
