The extension includes full no-trade protection for Pedroia and will begin following the last guaranteed season (2014) of Pedroia’s current six-year pact. All told, this means that he will be under contract with the Red Sox at roughly $14 million per year through at least 2021, his age 37 season.

Alex Rodriguez is reportedly trying to make a deal with the league similar to Ryan Braun's. Unlike Braun, however, A-Rod's suspension is not expected to be imminent. Additionally, his $11 million option for the 2015 season will now become the guaranteed first-year money on his new extension, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
The 29-year-old Pedroia has garnered all sorts of accolades in his eight years with the Red Sox, winning the 2007 AL Rookie of Year, 2008 AL MVP, and earning a spot on four All-Star squads. Generously listed at 5’8, 165 pounds, the short-statured Pedroia is a career .303/.371/.457 hitter with 96 home runs in just over 950 big-league games.
While Pedroia wasn't set to hit free agency for at least another year, that doesn't mean his extension won't have an immediate effect on the market. The Yankees and second baseman Robinson Cano have been trying to work out a deal for some time, but given the team-friendly nature of Pedroia's new pact, Cano may now try to test the free-agent waters to get more money.
