The Pittsburgh Pirates placed closer Jason Grilli on the 15-day disabled list after he left Monday night's game with discomfort in his forearm. The team is calling the injury a right forearm strain and Grilli flew back to Pittsburgh to be examined by doctors, according to the Associated Press.

The injury is cause for concern for the Pirates, as Grilli called for trainers after throwing a pitch in the ninth inning of Monday’s game against Washington. Grilli reacted immediately and appeared to be in significant pain, according to Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.

Grilli heads to the DL leading the National League in saves with 30. He’s fresh off his first All-Star appearance and was recently featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. If the injury turns out to be significant, it would be a major blow to the Pirates, but Charlie Wilmoth of Bucs Dugout noted the Pirates are at least fortunate it came before the trade deadline, so they should be able to acquire reinforcements.

In the meantime, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Mark Melancon will take over as closer.
