Jake Peavy rumors: Red Sox, Cardinals suitors for White Sox RHP

The White Sox starter is considered the best pitcher available following the Matt Garza trade.

The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals have emerged as suitors for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Peavy appears to be the top starter available on the trade market after the Texas Rangers acquired Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs. The right-hander recently returned to the White Sox after missing six weeks with a broken rib, and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings against the Atlanta Braves. Overall, Peavy is 7-4 with a 4.19 ERA.

The Red Sox's interest in Peavy is likely dependent on the injury status of Clay Buchholz, according to Heyman. Buchholz recently received good news after seeking a second opinion on his injured neck from Dr. James Andrews, and is scheduled to resume his throwing program. Boston is still interested in Peavy despite the positive report, as Buchholz is still not expected to return soon, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are another team that has had discussions about Peavy, writes Heyman. Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers drafted Peavy when he was with the San Diego Padres organization, and Towers signed Peavy to a contract extension in San Diego.
