Jesse Crain injury: White Sox RHP could return Sunday

The relief pitcher threw a 33-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and plans to throw one more before returning to the team.

USA TODAY Sports

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Jesse Crain threw a bullpen session Tuesday, and hopes to return to the club Sunday or Monday, the team announced.

Crain threw a 33-pitch bullpen session consisting of fastballs and changeups and felt good afterward, reports Scott Merkin of MLB.com. The reliever is scheduled to throw another side session Thursday.

White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper discussed Crain’s rehab, telling Merkin:

“His health is still our foremost thing in our mind to make sure he is well. We want to do it to the point where he’s maybe a tad fatigued, making sure you’ve got that good workout in and feel good before, during and after. Now we’re waiting on the after, which is tomorrow.”

Crain pitched well out of the Chicago bullpen before suffering a right shoulder strain, as the reliever owns a 0.74 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 36-2/3 innings. His first-half campaign earned Crain a selection to the All-Star team for the first time in his career.

If Crain can return healthy before the July 31 trade deadline, he would give White Sox general manager Rick Hahn a valuable trade chip. The Rockies, Cardinals, Reds, Dodgers and Braves have all reportedly monitored Crain's health.
