Trade talks surrounding Jake Peavy are beginning to heat up now that Matt Garza has found a new home. The Oakland Athletics could be a dark horse candidate to acquire the White Sox pitcher's services, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
Jake Peavy trade rumors: Athletics, Red Sox, Cardinals interested, per report
Interest in Peavy is expected to pick up now that Matt Garza is off the market.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox have been the most active teams chasing Peavy. However, Heyman notes that the Athletics made a play for Garza "at the eleventh hour" and could do the same with Peavy.
It appears that while the Athletics would like to acquire a bat to improve the team’s lineup, there are none on the market that General Manager Billy Beane deems a game changer. Beane would prefer to chase a good pitcher than a so-so bat.
Still, Oakland is not desperate to acquire a pitcher. The team has a solid rotation that will soon be bolstered by the return of Brett Anderson. Top prospect Sonny Gray is also considered major league ready and could be called up to strengthen the starting pitching.
Both the Cardinals and the Red Sox are dealing with injuries to the back of their rotations. St. Louis lost Jaime Garcia for the year early in the season, and Clay Buchholz remains out for Boston with shoulder inflammation.
Peavy has a 4.19 ERA in 2013 for the White Sox, with 69 strikeouts and 15 walks over 73 innings. He is under contract through the 2014 season.
