Rockies 2, Marlins 1: Jorge De La Rosa pitched six shutout innings while the Rockies pinned two earned runs on Marlins starter Jacob Turner. That ended up being enough as Miami managed just one run late in the game when Donovan Solano singled in Placido Polanco in the eighth. The Marlins threatened to bring another home, but pinch-hitter Justin Ruggiano struck out to end the frame.

Cardinals 11, Phillies 3: Philadelphia could not get much going against Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook early on. Westbrook pitched four shutout innings before allowing one run in the fifth. The Phillies got to him for two more in the seventh inning, but by then it was too late: The Cardinals had already scored nine runs of their own, including five in the fifth inning.
Brewers 3, Padres 1: If Kyle Lohse is on the trading block, he helped the Brewers’ case for a nice return today, pitching seven innings with just a Nick Hundley solo home run against him. Meanwhile, Carlos Gomez led the Brewers offense with a 4-for-4 day at the plate, driving in two runs on a bases-loaded double. Gomez also stole second base on a play that forced a run-scoring error.
Tigers 6, White Sox 2: Anibal Sanchez continued his career year with six shutout innings, lowering his ERA to 2.68 on the season. John Danks did not fare so well as the Tigers got to him for six runs. The good news for the White Sox is Danks still managed to pitch seven innings, saving the bullpen. A three-run homer by Prince Fielder in the first did the most damage.
Royals 4, Orioles 3: The trade rumors are swirling, and Ervin Santana is becoming a popular name on many tongues. He didn’t make himself any less appealing with an eight inning performance that saw him allow just one earned run. Baltimore’s Wei-Yin Chen pitched well too, throwing seven innings of his own, with all three runs against him being earned. All three of those runs came off the bat of Eric Hosmer, who hit two home runs on the day. However, with a tie game in the ninth, Alcides Escobar doubled to bring in David Lough for a walkoff victory.
Pirates 4, Nationals 2: The Nationals had a chance to tie this game in the ninth inning, but a blown call ended the contest prematurely. After Wilson Ramos singled, he was “tagged out” by Neil Walker after a Denard Span grounder that started a game ending double-play. However, as you can see in the .gif, Walker clearly missed the tag. The Nationals would have had some work to do to tie the game up, but they should have had at least one more batter.
Rangers 3, Yankees 1: Welcome to Texas, Matt Garza. The recently acquired starting pitcher made his presence known immediately, tossing 7⅓ innings with just an unearned run on five hits. Of course, Garza also made the throwing error that made that run unearned. A.J. Pierzynski starred on offense for the Rangers, hitting a solo home run and an RBI single.
Rays 5, Red Sox 1: 2012 Cy Young winner David Price may not be having the best season, but he has been mostly excellent since returning from the DL three weeks ago. On Wednesday he pitched a complete game, his third in his last four starts. Mike Napoli homered for Boston’s only run. Price received some timely hitting in support as singles, bunts, and sacrifice flies netted Tampa Bay three runs in the third inning, then two more in the eighth.
Braves 8, Mets 2: The Braves may have won the game, but at a cost. Starting pitcher Tim Hudson was carted off the field in the eighth inning after Mets’ utility man Eric Young, Jr. accidentally stepped on Hudson’s foot while the pitcher covered first on a ground ball. He had been in the middle of a great start, finishing with four hits allowed and nine strikeouts over 7⅔ innings. Dan Uggla, Andrelton Simmons and Evan Gattis all homered to provide run support.
Dodgers 8, Blue Jays 3 (10 innings): The Dodgers almost didn’t pull this one out, but down 3-2 in the ninth inning, Andre Ethier singled into center field. A misplay by Blue Jays center fielder Colby Rasmus allowed Yasiel Puig to score the tying run all the way from first and sent the game into extra innings. The Dodgers then scored five runs in the 10th inning on two home runs (including Puig’s ninth), two doubles and two walks to secure the victory. This win marks the Dodgers sixth consecutive victory, the longest such streak in the majors currently.
Indians 10, Mariners 1: Seattle’s eight-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Scott Kazmir and the Indians. Kazmir had the pitching performance of the day, throwing eight innings of one-hit ball and allowing just one unearned run. He also struck out seven Mariners while walking two. Overall, Seattle managed just two singles on the day. Joe Saunders couldn’t keep up, allowing six runs, five of which were earned, over 4⅔ innings.
Angels 1, Twins 0: The Angels picked up a big win behind staff ace Jered Weaver, who gave up two hits and walked only one while striking out nine in eight scoreless innings. That leads to this tasty tidbit:

The Angels scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Albert Pujols.
Athletics 4, Astros 3: Starters Bud Norris and A.J. Griffin put up nearly identical lines, both going 6⅓ innings and giving up three earned runs. Although the Astros grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the A’s picked up three runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Eric Sogard and a Coco Crisp home run and held on for the win.
Cubs 7, Diamondbacks 6 (12 innings): Chicago jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on, but the Diamondbacks scratched back into it bit by bit (including a three-run homer by Paul Goldschmidt in the sixth) to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Cody Ross. The Diamondbacks left the bases loaded three times in the game, including in the bottom of the 10th. The Cubs finally broke through with a go-ahead RBI double from Nate Schierholtz in the top of the 12th inning. Schierholtz was 3-for-6 with a home run and drove in five of Chicago’s seven runs.
Reds 8, Giants 3: Were you aware that the Giants were playing poorly? They are playing poorly! The Reds kept up their hit parade that allowed them to take three out of four games in three days at AT&T Park. Ironically enough, the only game they lost was Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader, in which they were the “home” team. The Giants are playing poorly. The Reds are not. Science!
