The Fish give the Rangers a flat “no” every single time, but you have to admire Jon Daniels’ tenacity. They know what they want and they’re going to probably keep asking for it until they get it. There’s always the chance that Daniels is just massively trolling Jeffrey Loria, of course, but it seems more likely that Texas really wants Stanton.
The Bad Teams that Won't Sell
Not yet, at least. Stanton, 23, hasn't really found his power stroke this year, but is still considered one of the best young sluggers in the game. He is under team control through the 2016 season, so the Marlins don't really have any need to deal him anytime soon, but with Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick now flanking Stanton in the outfield, he may eventually be pushed out for a younger, cheaper option.
With right fielder Nelson Cruz in murky waters regarding a potential drug suspension, Texas needs a short-term contingency plan should he go down between now and October. But since Stanton is apparently off the market for the moment, the Rangers have currently set their sights elsewhere. The club is reportedly interested in a trio of outfielders on non-contenders: White Sox right fielder Alex Rios, Padres right fielder Chris Denorfia and Marlins center fielder Justin Ruggiano, who is likely more available than his slugging teammate.
