Carlos Gonzalez injury: Rockies OF aggravates sprained finger, leaves game

Carlos Gonzalez has been one of the best players in the National League this year, but his bat has been quelled by a sprained finger. He left Thursday’s game in the fourth inning when the injury acted up again.

USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Gonzalez is day-to-day after re-injuring his sprained middle finger after the National League's home run leader left the Colorado Rockies' game against Miami Marlins in the fourth inning Thursday.

Per the Rockies’ Twitter account, the back-to-back All-Star re-aggravated the injury in his first at-bat of the game, when he struck out swinging. He tried to play through it, continuing until his next scheduled at-bat, but eventually came out of the game, which entered a delay in the seventh inning tied at zero.

Gonzalez has been nagged by the injury all month, missing two games with the injury before the All-Star break. And in the team’s current homestand, he’s been only 3-for-20 while wrapping his middle and ring fingers together and taking anti-inflammatories. He’s currently hitting .297 with 26 home runs, leading the NL in homers, slugging and OPS. The Rockies have already dropped two of three to the lowly Marlins with Gonzalez’s bat slumping, and could lose again Thursday.

To make up for Gonzalez's absence, Jordan Pacheco entered the game at first base, Michael Cuddyer moved from first to right field, and Charlie Blackmon moved to left field.
