The biggest trade rumor from Thursday involved the now completed deal that sent Alfonso Soriano to the New York Yankees, but there are more rumors circulating on deals that still might happen.
MLB trade rumor roundup: Red Sox and D’backs scouting Peavy, Utley and Phillies discussing extension
Taking a look at some of the rumors swirling around MLB.

Red Sox, Diamondbacks scout Peavy
The Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks had scouts on hand Thursday night to watch Chicago White Sox starter Jake Peavy pitch against the Detroit Tigers. Peavy tossed seven innings, allowing four runs on fours hits while fanning seven.
Peavy is rumored to be one of the top trade targets for the Red Sox, with some reports claiming that the two teams have already begun discussions on a possible trade. The Diamondbacks could also use some help in the rotation, and Arizona general manager Kevin Towers is familiar with Peavy from their time in the San Diego Padres organization.
Boston looking “pretty hard” at Gonzalez
The Red Sox are also looking “pretty hard” into signing 26-year-old Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, and are one of five teams still in the race for the right-handed pitcher. Gonzalez is expected to sign with a team soon, and hopes to contribute to a major-league club before the season is over.
Gonzalez is appealing to Boston because he only costs money. Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino told Tim Healey of WEEI that the team is hesitant to trade prospects before the trade deadline. The team’s hesitance to part with its prospects has Boston looking at internal options to improve their bullpen.
Phillies, Utley discussing extension
The Philadelphia Phillies have had recent talks with second baseman Chase Utley about a contract extension, and are not listening to trade offers for the 34-year-old. Philadelphia is planning to move forward with Utley as the face of the franchise, and have remained unwilling to part with key assets.
The Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals have both been linked to trade rumors surrounding Utley, but a contract extension extinguishes any potential trades. Utley will be a free agent at the end of the season, so the Phillies would like to sign Utley before he hits the market.
