Mets trade rumors: New York unlikely to trade Bobby Parnell or Marlon Byrd

The Mets have little interest in selling before the trade deadline. Instead, they want to remain competitive in the second half of the season to build momentum for next year.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets are not planning to trade closer Bobby Parnell or outfielder Marlon Byrd unless offered a deal they "simply can't turn down," sources told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.

Rumors have swirled about a potential Parnell or Byrd trade, but the Mets have not wavered from their unwillingness to sell this season, reports Martino. New York wants to keep both players to remain competitive in the second half of the season and build momentum for the future.

Parnell has pitched well out of the bullpen this year, as he owns a 2.30 ERA with 20 saves in 24 chances. The reliever is under team control next season, and the Mets view Parnell as a key contributor moving forward.

Byrd signed a minor-league contract with New York over the offseason and has served as the team’s starting rightfielder. The 35-year-old has hit .282/.326/.518 with 17 homers and 57 RBI, making him an attractive to teams in search of a right-handed hitting outfielder.
