Oakland Athletics left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson could return to the team from the disabled list in a relief role, according to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle. Anderson is working his way back from a fractured right foot.
Brett Anderson injury: Athletics LHP open to returning in relief role
The A’s have received excellent starting pitching as of late, but might have an opening in their bullpen. Enter Brett Anderson?

Anderson threw a successful bullpen session on Saturday, per Slusser, and is nearing a rehab assignment. He would need multiple starts to complete his rehab assignment, but shifting to the bullpen could expedite his return. The A’s Opening Day starter seems to be all for the move:
“At this point, I just want to come back and pitch on the mound in a big-league game. I’d be happy just to participate.”
Anderson has made one career relief appearance in the big leagues. That appearance happened April 29 in a 19-inning game against the Los Angeles Angels in which Anderson tossed 5 ⅓ frames of one-run ball.
The A’s lead the American League West with a 60-43 record, thanks in part to a starting rotation that has compiled a 3.82 ERA.
