Around the Bases: Archer tosses shutout, Scherzer picks up win No. 15

Astros 8, Blue Jays 6: Chris Carter blasted a three-run homer off Josh Johnson, while Justin Maxwell and Matt Dominguez hit solo shots off the starter. Johnson struggled, allowing seven runs on seven hits to fall to 1-7 on the year. Dallas Keuchel tossed a season-high 7 1/3 innings to snap a six-start winless streak.

Athletics 3, Angels 1: Derek Norris lined a pinch-hit, two-run homer off Scott Downs in the bottom of the seventh inning, powering the Athletics to their second straight victory. Tommy Milone tossed seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits while fanning six. Grant Balfour threw a perfect ninth to record his 28th save of the season.

Rays 1, Yankees 0: Chris Archer tossed his second complete game shutout in his past three game, as he only allowed two hits while striking out six. Archer threw 97 pitches, improving to 6-3 with a 2.39 ERA. Kelly Johnson plated the Rays' only run, driving in Ben Zobrist from second with a single in the sixth inning.

Braves 2, Cardinals 0: Andrelton Simmons hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning, snapping a scoreless tie in a rematch of last season's NL wild-card game. Julio Teheran shutout the Cardinals for seven frames, only allowing two hits while striking out six. Atlanta only went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding 10.

Nationals 4, Mets 1: Dan Haren won the for the first time since May 9, surrendering one run on three hits while fanning six. Bryce Harper smashed a two-run homer, while Ian Desmond and Denard Span hit back-to-back home runs in the second. The Nationals tagged Dillon Gee with his first lost since June 17.

Twins 4, Mariners 0: Samuel Deduno worked seven scoreless frames against the Mariners, only giving up three hits while striking out six. Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, while Brian Dozier added an insurance run with a solo shot in the ninth. Kyle Seager and Brad Miller both had multi-hit games for Seattle.

Red Sox 7, Orioles 3: Stephen Drew hit two homers and drove in five to lead the Red Sox over the Orioles. Shane Victorino also went deep Boston, who won for just the fourth time in 10 games. David Ortiz received an ejection after the seventh inning, and took out his frustration on the dugout phones.

Indians 1, Rangers 0: Justin Masterson carried a shutout into the eighth inning, only allowing one run on five hits while fanning eight. Masterson out-dueled Yu Darvish, who surrendered one run on three hits while forcing 11 strikeouts. Michael Bourn drove in the only run of the game, hitting a leadoff homer in the bottom half of the first inning.

Tigers 10, Phillies 0: Miguel Cabrera hit a home run in his first at-bat after missing the previous four games, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI. He's now within five home runs of the MLB leader, Chris Davis. Matt Tuiasosopo capped off a five-run first with a three-run homer, while Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter each collected three hits. Max Scherzer only allowed one hit over six innings, striking out seven to pick up win No. 15 of the season.

Pirates 7, Marlins 4: Michael McKenry had a career best four-hits, driving in two runs to raise his average .26 points, from .191 to .217. Neil Walker hit a pair of RBI doubles, while Garrett Jones also plated two runs. Mark Melancon threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth straight of the year.

Padres 12, Diamondbacks 3: Andrew Cashner threw a quality start and hit his first career home run to help the Padres rout the Diamondbacks. San Diego rocked Tyler Skaggs for seven runs on three hits and five walks over 3 2/3 innings. Chris Denorfia and Chase Headley also went yard for the Padres.

Cubs 1, Giants 0: Nate Schierholtz hit a solo homer off Sergio Romo in the top of the ninth inning to break scoreless tie. San Francisco loaded the bases against Pedro Strop in the eighth inning with no outs, but failed to drive in run. Chicago is 18-13 over their past 31 games.

Dodgers 4, Reds 1: Hyun-Jin Ryu earned his ninth victory of the season, shutting down the Reds over seven innings as the Dodgers improved to 8-1 after the All-Star break. Ryu only allowed one run on two hits, fanning nine while issuing one walk. Skip Schumaker went 2-for-4 with a home run, while Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez also had multi-hit performances.

Brewers 7, Rockies 5: They had to wait out an hour and 45 minute rain delay in the ninth inning, but it proved worthwhile for the Brewers. Juan Francisco and Jonathan Lucroy homered for Milwaukee. However, shortstop Jean Segura left the game in the bottom of the sixth with tightness in his forearm. For the Rockies, Troy Tulowitzki had three hits, including a home run.
