Biogenesis suspensions for Alex Rodriguez, others could come this week, per report

Alex Rodriguez probably won’t receive a lifetime ban, but he could very well be suspended for the remainder of this season and the entirety of next season. The MLB’s decision might come this week, although he’ll be able to appeal.

Alex Rodriguez might find out his fate sooner rather than later: Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that suspensions for Rodriguez and the other players implicated in the Biogenesis scandal will come down this week.

Ryan Braun's suspension came out early because of Braun's willingness to go along with the punishment -- a willingness some of the other players implicated have shown as well. Many of the players will receive 50-game suspensions, akin to those handed down for first offenses to players who test positive for steroids.

Rodriguez, of course, is a special case. He’s not willing to settle, and although he’s never been suspended before, he’s admitted to previous use, lied to MLB investigators and tried to obstruct the league from getting to the bottom of the Biogenesis case. There was talk that Rodriguez could receive a lifetime ban, but Sherman writes that it’s more likely that he would be suspended for this year as well as next season. But of course, that could very well end up being the death knell for his career: he’ll turn 40 during the middle of the 2015 season, and has had multiple injury issues.

It’s expected that Rodriguez would try to fight the case, with the ability to appeal to an arbitrator. Although Rodriguez wouldn’t be paid any of his salary for years he was suspended, he’s still owed $61 million from 2015 to 2017. The Yankees would probably try to void his contract based on fraud.
