Albert Pujols injury: Angels 1B placed on DL with left foot injury

Pujols re-aggravated an old injury on Friday, tearing his left plantar fascia.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed first baseman Albert Pujols on the disabled list with a partial tear of his left plantar fascia, reports the team's official Twitter account. The Angels have called up outfielder Kole Calhoun to take his roster spot.

More Angels coverage: Halos Heaven

Pujols has dealt with plantar fasciitis in his left foot for years, and re-aggravated the injury on Friday. Offseason surgery on the injury has been talked about in the past. That possibility is growing stronger than ever.

The Angels sent Pujols back to Los Angeles Saturday to be re-evaluated. A tear of the plantar fascia usually requires around six-to-eight weeks of recovery time. That would put his return date somewhere around late September. However, with the Angels looking unlikely to make the playoffs, this injury could spell the end of Pujols’s season.

Pujols, 33, has hit .258/.330/.437 over 99 games this season. He is still owed another $217 million over the next eight seasons.

Calhoun has a 1.047 OPS with 12 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 59 games for Triple-A Salt Lake this season.
