MLB trade rumors: White Sox want to build around Jake Peavy, according to report

The White Sox may have thrown a wrench into the Jake Peavy sweepstakes after reportedly saying he’s a player they’d rather build around than send elsewhere.

There are rampant trade rumors around Jake Peavy, but the Chicago White Sox are telling interested teams that they instead want to build around the pitcher, reports Buster Olney of ESPN. Prior to their disclousure, Peavy has been one of the most-discussed players on the market this July since Matt Garza went off the market.

There is a possibility that this is a ploy by the White Sox to gain leverage and, with the team so far out of contention, that eems likely. Chicago is reportedly shopping Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios, but Peavy is widely considered to be the team's best asset.

The veteran pitcher is under contract past this season, though, with a guaranteed salary in 2014 and then a player option for the 2015 season. He has an ERA of 4.28 over 80 innings this season, but has missed some time with a rib cage injury. If he's is truly off the market, though, teams could look to a plan B like Bud Norris of the Astros.
