Jonathan Papelbon: Yasiel Puig’s All-Star candidacy ‘an absolute joke’

Jonathan Papelbon is well on his way to a sixth career All-Star Game nod and doesn’t want to be joined by Dodgers phenom Yasiel Puig.

USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon is apparently not impressed with Los Angeles Dodgers rookie sensation Yasiel Puig.

Papelbon told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday that it would be “an absolute joke” for Puig to be included on the National League All-Star team when the midsummer classic takes place at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., on July 16. Papelbon continued his rant while reportedly failing to pronounce Puig’s last name correctly multiple times, according to ESPN.

“It’s really kind of stupid if you ask me ... I don’t even think he’s got a month in the big leagues. Just comparing him to this and that, and saying he’s going to make the All-Star team, that’s a joke to me.”

Puig improved his case for an All-Star nod on Tuesday night in Denver, going 3-for-5 with a home run -- his eighth of the season -- in an 8-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Puig entered the game hitting .436/.467/.713 in 107 plate appearances across 26 games.

Papelbon, a five-time All-Star, could garner another selection this season. He notched his 16th save of the year in a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday and lowered his ERA to 1.99.
