Diamondbacks trade rumors: Arizona talking Yovani Gallardo, John Axford, Jim Henderson, others with Milwaukee

The Arizona Diamondbacks are at the top of the closest division in baseball, and GM Kevin Towers is looking to Milwaukee for help down the stretch.

The Diamondbacks are currently in trade talks with the Milwaukee Brewers, and the two teams are discussing Yovani Gallardo, John Axford, Francisco Rodriguez and Jim Henderson, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

Morosi notes that the Arizona farm system has enough depth to make a deal for one or more these players appealing to the Brewers. Baseball America ranked Arizona’s system as the eighth-best in baseball heading into the 2013 season. However, Morosi notes that as of Wednesday night, no deal is apparent.

Arizona has an obvious need for pitching help at this point, with starters Brandon McCarthy, Trevor Cahill and Daniel Hudson on the DL and closer J.J. Putz missing some time recently. Given that need and their position in the division, the Diamondbacks are expected to be aggressive in trade talks as the deadline approaches, and this latest rumor fits that profile.

The Diamondbacks are currently 42-41 and lead the NL West by 1 1/2 games over the Colorado Rockies. They are also the only team over .500 in the division, which is easily the closest race in baseball at the start of July. The last-place San Francisco Giants are just three games back of Arizona. With five other NL teams sporting records equal to or better than the division-leading Diamondbacks, the Wild Card spots do not appear to be within reach of teams in the division as the trade deadline approaches.
