Miguel Cabrera injury: Tigers 3B to sit Thursday with ailing back

2012 AL MVP Miguel Cabrera will miss time with tightness in his lower back.

Tigers Manager Jim Leyland will sit star third baseman Miguel Cabrera Thursday as the 2012 American League MVP deals with tightness in his lower back, according to the team.

The back issue first began to plague Cabrera during batting practice on Tuesday, according to Tony Paul of the Detroit News. "It was tight in batting practice. It was sore. Hopefully it’s not a big deal," Cabrera said to Paul. He played through the pain on Tuesday, going 1-3 with a home run in the game. On Wednesday, Cabrera started the game against the Blue Jays in his regular spot at third base and in third in the lineup, but he was replaced by Don Kelly for the final frame with the Tigers up, 6-2. Jon Morosi for Fox Sports reports that the substitution was not necessarily related to the injury, however.

After becoming the first player since 1967 to win the Triple Crown, Cabrera currently leads the American League in batting average (.368), on-base percentage (.458 OBP) and RBI (85). He is second in the league in home runs at 26, trailing Baltimore’s Chris Davis, who has 31.
