MLB trade rumor roundup: Peavy may stay put, Wilson close to signing, Angels and Giants selling

Fewer than 48 hours remain until the non-waiver trade deadline hits... i.e. things are about to get crazy.

Three more relief pitchers changed hands on Monday, but there are still plenty of tempting players left to be had on the trade wire before Wednesday afternoon’s deadline arrives. Let’s take a look back at Monday’s biggest standing rumors to prep for the last two days of trade craziness:

ChiSox may hang on to Peavy

The Chicago White Sox seemed like sure sellers a few days ago, but first-year GM Rick Hahn may be having second thoughts about going into full-fledged rebuild mode. The club did move injured right-hander Jesse Crain on Monday, so they're not completely standing pat, but there was also the rumor that the club is "perfectly content keeping Peavy" and may decide to build around him rather than from him. There's always a good chance that these statements are a tactic to get teams to up their offers for the right-hander, but it's hard to tell when on the outside looking in. The Red Sox, Cardinals, and Orioles are all thought to be involved at some level in the Peavy sweepstakes.

Brian Wilson close to deal

Former San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson is close to signing a free-agent contract with a new club. While not technically a trade rumor, the pending signing of the hirsute right-hander is a big deadline move that could have a big impact on a team's playoff chances down the stretch. The Pirates, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Giants are all believed to be in the running for Wilson, who hasn't thrown a pitch in the big leagues since April 2012. Wilson held an audition for clubs last week and is believed to be close to fully recovered from his Tommy John operation.

Angels, Giants looking to trade veterans

Projected to be playoff locks when the season started, the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants are now firmly in sell mode as their postseason chances have gone out the window. The Halos already moved lefty reliever Scott Downs on Monday, but may also put their starting middle infielders on the block as well. It's unclear who will replace Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick should they depart this week -- Jean Segura and/or Alexi Amarista would have been nice -- it's clear that the Angels want several years from a starting pitcher in return. Giants GM Brian Sabean has made it known that he'd rather hang on to Hunter Pence and Tim Lincecum, but that doesn't necessarily mean to two pending free agents are completely unavailable.
