Mariners rumors: Mike Morse ‘very available’

The Yankees had interest in the slugger in the fall, but have not discussed a deal with the M’s recently.

USA TODAY Sports

UPDATE 12:45p.m. ET: The Tampa Bay Rays are among a number of teams in discussions with the Mariners about Mike Morse, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The Orioles may also be calling on Morse, but Heyman hears that the club has more interest in Twins first baseman Justin Morneau at the moment.

ORIGINAL: The Seattle Mariners may not be looking to sell the farm this week, but that doesn't mean they'll let Wednesday's trade deadline go by without trading anyone away. Case in point: the M's have made outfielder Mike Morse "very available" to anyone who's interested, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Sherman notes that the New York Yankees showed interest in Morse when the Nationals put him on the trading block over the winter, but there's no indication that they've had any sort of "serious talks" with Seattle recently.

The Yankees could certainly use another powerful right-handed bat -- the club's .593 OPS from the right side of the plate is easily the worst in baseball this season -- but they already added Alfonso Soriano earlier this week, so it's unclear whether they're still on the market for a bat.

Morse, 31, just returned from a DL stint on Monday. The Beast has been in a constant struggle with his body this season, spending several days on the sideline with a nagging quad injury. Limited to just 57 games so far, Morse is hitting .246/.307/.445 with 11 home runs in 231 plate appearances, so the M's aren't exactly selling high on him (like they would be with, say, Raul Ibanez).
