Chase Utley extension reportedly would be worth $13 millon per year

The Phillies told suitors of Chase Utley that the second baseman was unavailable leading up to the trade deadline. Now, the two parties are discussing a healthy contract extension.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Chase Utley are discussing a two- or three-year contract extension worth approximately $13 million per year, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

Utley is making $15 million in the final season of a seven-year, $85 million deal. Although he’ll make less than his 2013 salary going forward, the reported new contract would pay a higher average salary than Utley’s previous deal.

The Phillies told teams inquiring about Utley prior to the non-waiver trade deadling that the five-time All-Star was unavailable. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has previously stated that he views Utley as “a Phillie for life,” and a three-year extension would go a long way toward accomplishing that.

Utley is hitting .277/.341/.498 13 home runs and 33 extra-base hits in 317 plate appearances in 2013 for the Phillies, who enter the trade deadline with a 50-56 record.
