Matt Garza rumors: Boston Red Sox among teams that sent scouts to watch RHP

12 scouts witnessed the starter’s dominant performance against the Oakland Athletics.

USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox were one of the teams who scouted Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza's last start, according to Joe Stiglich of ESPNChicago.com.

A total of 12 scouts were on hand to watch Garza pitch on Wednesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. The Texas Rangers sent a scout to watch the starter pitch in his previous start, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Garza tossed eight strong innings against the Oakland Athletics, allowing one run on three hits. The pitcher's perfromance impressed Cubs manager Dale Sveum, who told Wittenmenyer:

“That was as good as I’ve seen him in two years, especially against seven lefthanders in that lineup. Had command of his fastball down and away and didn’t use too many curve balls. Had extra velocity when he needed it.”

The right-hander has looked dominant in his last four starts, going 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA. Garza has made nine starts after starting the season on the disabled list, and is 4-1 with a 3.45 ERA.
