Stephen Drew injury: Red Sox SS placed on DL

A nagging hamstring injury finally has Drew headed to the disabled list.

USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox placed shortstop Stephen Drew on the 15-day DL Friday, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Drew has been out of the Red Sox lineup since June 28 thanks to a strained right hamstring

Drew injured his hamstring one June 28 while running to second on a double against the Toronto Blue Jays. After signing a one-year, $9.5 million deal with Boston in the offseason, the 30-year-old shortstop had struggled early in the year, hitting just .233/.313/.409 over 262 plate appearances. However, as Bradford notes, he had been hitting well in the 10 games prior to the injury.

With Drew out, rookie Jose Iglesias will take over at shortstop full time. The young Cuban had been regarded as one of the top fielding players in the minors prior to the 2013 season, but his weak bat limited his playing time at the major league level. This season he appears to be turning a corner as a hitter, however, posting a .411/.458/.532 line over 155 plate appearances while sharing time with Drew and also seeing action at third base. The Red Sox have also added Brandon Synder from Triple-A Pawtucket in the wake of Drew's injury to shore up the infield.

The team called up right-handed reliever Jose De La Torre to take his place on the 25-man roster according to Bradford.
