Eduardo Nunez injury: Yankees SS activated; David Phelps put on DL

The Yankees will immediately place Nunez into the starting lineup. Phelps is expected to throw again in 10 days after suffering a forearm strain.

The New York Yankees made a couple roster moves Saturday as the team activated shortstop Eduardo Nunez from the 60-day disabled list. To make room for him on the roster, starting pitcher David Phelps was placed on the DL, reports MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Nunez started the season as the Yankees' starting shortstop with Derek Jeter on the disabled list due to a broken left ankle. Nunez, however, suffered a left ribcage strain and was placed on the DL on May 6.

The Yankees have used a hodgepodge of options at shortstop with Nunez out, including Reid Brignac, Jayson Nix, and Luis Cruz. Brignac and Nix are no longer with the team while Cruz was signed recently after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Nunez had been hitting .200/.290/.275 before going on the DL.

Phelps, meanwhile, is out with a right forearm strain. Manager Joe Girardi said Phelps will be able to throw again in 10 days and the team will then “go from there.” After beginning the year in the Yankees’ bullpen, Phelps has been a member of the rotation since the beginning of May. He has a 4.93 ERA in 12 starts this season.

First baseman Mark Teixeira was transferred to the 60-day DL to create room on the 40-man roster for Nunez.
