Yadier Molina injury: Cardinals catcher diagnosed with knee inflammation

The Cardinals might not be without their All-Star backstop for long after all.

USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina underwent an MRI on Sunday that revealed inflammation in his right knee, writes Jenifer Langosch and Chad Thornburg of MLB.com.

The MRI revealed no structural damage, so a stint on the disabled list to recover is not a given. Molina believes that a few days rest will help with the inflammation, and hopes to avoid a stint on the disabled list. The catcher wants to return to the lineup by Tuesday, but the Cardinals were not willing to make the same guarantee.

Molina is having his most impressive season at the plate, hitting .346/.388/.490 with six homers and 45 RBI. The catcher received the most fan votes in the National League for the All-Star game, and plans to play in the exhibition contest if he can return to the field in time.

Tony Cruz will start at catcher while Molina is sidelined. Cruz has struggled this season, hitting .171/.209/.220. Ty Wigginton will serve as the emergency catcher; the veteran has never caught a MLB game.
