Red Sox owner: Money not an issue at trade deadline

The Red Sox should have payroll flexibility at the trade deadline, partially thanks to their trade with the Dodgers last season.

Handout

Boston Red Sox owner John Henry said that money will not be an issue for the team if they need to add players before the trade deadline, reports Sean McAdam of CSN New England.

Henry admitted that there might be a few larger salaries that the team couldn't take on, but otherwise said that the team would be willing to add payroll. Boston began the season with a $154 million payroll, partially thanks to unloading a number of high-priced players in their trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.

The trade with the Dodgers helped the Red Sox move under the luxury tax threshold, which Henry told McAdam is a key reason why the team can add more salary:

“We don’t have issues because we got under the (luxury tax threshold) last year. So we don’t have an issue going over because that’s only when you go over two years in a row (when significant penalties kick in).”

Boston enters Monday with a 54-36, leading the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles by 4 1/2 games in the AL East. The Red Sox are rumored to be interested in adding a bullpen arm, especially after Andrew Miller was placed on the DL.
