Matt Garza rumors: Chicago Cubs may keep RHP, sign long-term, per report

The Cubs have had internal discussions about keeping the starting pitcher instead of trading him.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs may choose to hold on to Matt Garza and sign the starting pitcher to a long-term contract, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting.

The Cubs have been shopping Garza to teams in need of a starting pitcher, but want a top prospect in return. Opposing general managers have been unwilling to part with a top prospect for Garza, sources have informed Heyman.

Now Chicago is considering a contract extension for the starting pitcher. The two sides held discussions about a contract extension two springs ago, but failed to come close to an agreement.

Garza has made nine starts for the Cubs this season, and is 4-1 with a 3.45 ERA. The right-hander has looked dominant in his last four starts, going 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA.

A number of teams have been rumored to hold interest in acquiring Garza, as the current starting pitcher market is thin. If Garza is not made available, the price for pitchers like John Danks and Jake Peavy of the Chicago White Sox may increase.
