Matt Kemp injury: Dodgers star headed to DL

The Dodgers have found their short-term solution to the logjam in the outfield, though it is less than an ideal situation.

USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp will be put on the disabled list due to a left shoulder injury, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. The team will reportedly recall outfielder Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace Kemp on the roster. Van Slyke is batting .236 with six home runs in 80 plate appearances for the Dodgers this season.

Kemp injured his shoulder on a swing-and-miss, causing him to eventually be removed from the game as well as Sunday and Monday’s, too. The news came just after the lineups were posted Monday afternoon.

The Dodgers recently ran into a logjam at the outfield spot, with Kemp, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier and Yasiel Puig all deserving playing time. Kemp's injury will solve that problem in the short-term, though, and allow the team to assess their other options.

The team will also place pitcher Stephen Fife on the DL Monday, according to Hernandez. Chris Capuano will take Fife's next turn in the rotation. Capuano has an ERA of 5.39 in 12 games this year, 10 of which were starts.
