Carlos Gomez robs Joey Votto of go-ahead homer, Votto can’t believe it

The game ends with this catch, and Votto refuses to accept it.

Mike McGinnis

Carlos Gomez is pretty all right at defense. On Monday night, he reminded the Reds and the rest of us of this, when, with his team only up by one run in the top of the ninth in Milwaukee, he ended the game and secured the victory with a leaping, homer-robbing catch off the bat of Joey Votto:

Gomez just creeps along slowly, and waits to pounce, then snatches it out of mid-air before it can land. Joey Votto, as you would expect on a game-ending blast that even saw the pitcher slowly leave the mound assuming the worst, was incredulous about the whole thing.

Votto doesn’t look as if he even believes Gomez caught it at first, like he’s demanding proof that the ball in Gomez’s glove is the one he crushed. Gomez, in fact, does show the ball in his glove to Votto on his run back to the infield -- reality sets in pretty quickly for Votto after that, and he moves on up the steps from denial to acceptance in short order.
