Joba Chamberlain rumors: Phillies have expressed interest in the Yankees reliever

The right-hander has piqued the interest of Ruben Amaro and co.

The Philadelphia Phillies have expressed interest in Yankees right-hander Joba Chamberlain, reports Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

This is the second time that Chamberlain, 27, has shown up on the trade rumor mill in the last few weeks. The Braves and Giants reportedly sent scouts to watch the right-hander throw recently, though San Francisco’s scout may have actually been watching other relievers.

Chamberlain, somewhat healthy this season for the first time since 2010, owns an unsightly 5.75 earned-run average and 2.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20⅓ innings on the year. Considering how far his star has fallen in the last few years and that he’s a free agent at the season’s end, Chamberlain is unlikely to command a lot in a trade unless the acquiring team is looking to just unload salary, which the Phillies may be willing to do.

The Phillies are said to be open to trading corner infielder Michael Young ($6MM) and possibly catcher Carlos Ruiz ($5MM), both of whom would fit the Yankees’ needs. However, GM Brian Cashman’s interest in dealing with the Phillies is “lukewarm at best,” per Feinsand, so the chances of Philadelphia dumping some salary in exchange for Chamberlain don’t appear to be great.
