Alex Cobb injury: Rays RHP progressing, throws 2nd bullpen session
Tampa Bay still has no timeline for Cobb’s return from his concussion, but he’s taking steps in the right direction.

More Rays: Ben Zobrist, All Star Again
The right-hander threw 27 pitches in his first bullpen session last Friday. He is scheduled to throw again on Thursday. If all goes well then, Cobb will step things up to facing batters from behind a screen.
Cobb, 25, was injured on June 15 when he was struck in the side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer. Removed from the field on a stretcher, Cobb was lucky to suffer only a mild concussion as a result of the blow to the noggin.
The right-hander continues to deal with random bouts of vertigo because of fluid buildup in his inner ear, but said that he felt “10 times better” on Monday than he did during his first bullpen session last week. Cobb is well ahead of where the training staff expected him to be at this point, but the Rays have not set a firm timeframe for his recovery. For his part, Cobb expects to be back on the mound in St. Pete by August.
Cobb has really come into his own in his second full season as a member of the Rays’ rotation. The right-hander owns a 3.01 earned-run average and 3.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio through his first 13 starts, putting him on pace to shatter his career-best marks across the board.
