The Tigers announced a pair of moves on Tuesday afternoon, as they placed second baseman Omar Infante on the disabled list, then recalled Hernan Perez from Double-A Erie to take his place on the roster. Infante is suffering from a left ankle sprain, and the move is retroactive to July 4.

Detroit loses their second baseman to an ankle sprain suffered late last week.

Infante has played in 76 of the Tigers’ 83 games, with all of those contests coming at the keystone. He’s hit .309/.340/.447 and is sixth among regulars in OPS+ at 110. Perez, on the other hand, has hit .300/.324/.422 at Double-A -- it’s not expected the 22-year-old will replicate Infante’s production exactly during his stay in the majors, but if he can put the ball in play and field as expected until Infante’s return, he will have done his job.
The Tigers are currently 3-1/2 games up in the American League Central, so while they don't have an enormous cushion with Infante out, they've got at least a little room to breathe over the second-place Indians.
