The Kansas City Royals placed second baseman Chris Getz on the disabled list Thursday morning in order to clear roster space for new acquisition Justin Maxwell, reports Bob Dutton of the KC Star.

This year's MLB trade deadline didn't give us many headline grabbing deals, but some teams made the most of their chances.Getz, 29, has been dealing with his knee sprain for about two weeks now. The infielder’s left knee gave out on him while running the bases on July 20, forcing him out of the game. He was able to return to the lineup just a few days after the initial injury, but continued discomfort has sidelined him since Sunday (his DL stint is backdated to then).
Getz began the year as the Royals' starting second baseman, but his persistent struggles at the plate this year -- .209/.280/.281 in 176 plate appearances -- have forced Kansas City to give more playing time to Elliot Johnson, Miguel Tejada and Johnny Giavotella at the keystone. Giavotella is the club's second baseman of the future, but he's in Triple-A at the moment, so Johnson and Tejada will likely split time while Getz is on the DL.
It’s unclear what the club plans to do about making roster space when Getz returns from the DL since Maxwell is unlikely to go anywhere.
